What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is owned by Cambridge English, IDP, and the British Council. This test is to check the English language skills of non-native speakers, to present they have good control over both spoken and written English.

 

It is accepted by 11,000 education providers across the world. Individuals wanting to migrate to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United States can take this test.

 

IELTS has two modules:

  • Academic 

  • General

 

In the test four skills are tested:

 

  1. Reading

  2. Writing

  3. Listening

  4. Speaking

 

An individual wanting to study in a university (undergraduate/postgraduate level) or registered professional fields such as medicine, accounting, etc. must take an academic module while a General module must be considered by people planning to study below degree level e.g., secondary level.

 

It is most apt to check with the university or organization when it comes to choosing the IELTS module. Reading and Writing sections are different for both Academic and General however, listening and speaking are the same.

 

Academic Reading: It consists of 3 long and complex comprehensions from educational resources.

 

General Reading: It has 3 different sections taken from advertisements; newspapers related to everyday circumstances etc.

 

Academic Writing: It has two tasks called task 1 where visual data is presented to write a report on and task 2 is writing an essay in 250 words around the topic.

 

General Writing,: In task 1 it is asked to write a letter about the given situation or request and task 2 is similar to writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

 

The band scores required totally depend on the country and university one wants to study in.
