What is TOEFL?

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language which is one of the most popular English proficiency tests taken by students or people to study abroad accepted by countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and a few European countries such as Germany and France. It is to assess the language skills of non-native or native speakers.

It consists of 4 sections such as follows:

Reading
Writing
Speaking
Listening

It was announced by the ETS official body conducting this exam that certain changes are being made in the computer-based TOEFL Exam which came into effect on 26 July 2023. The minimum score to pass depends on the university a student is applying for. Instructions remain the same for the paper-based edition of the test.

Here are a few changes that came into play for computer-based tests:

TOEFL is now 2 hours long test.
Writing for an academic discussion is the new independent writing task. In this test, takers are involved in the online discussion around a topic given by a professor, and a few responses from different students are given, now the test taker must write his/her opinion about the same topic within 10 minutes.
Listening is about 36 minutes and has 28 questions based on three lectures and two conversations.
Reading takes about 35 minutes and has 20 questions with two passages.

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is owned by Cambridge English, IDP, and the British Council. This test is to check the English language skills of non-native speakers, to present they have good control over both spoken and written English.

It is accepted by 11,000 education providers across the world. Individuals wanting to migrate to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United States can take this test.

IELTS has two modules:

Academic
General

In the test four skills are tested:

Reading
Writing
Listening
Speaking

An individual wanting to study in a university (undergraduate/postgraduate level) or registered professional fields such as medicine, accounting, etc. must take an academic module while a General module must be considered by people planning to study below degree level e.g., secondary level.

It is most apt to check with the university or organization when it comes to choosing the IELTS module. Reading and Writing sections are different for both Academic and General however, listening and speaking are the same.

Academic Reading: It consists of 3 long and complex comprehensions from educational resources.

General Reading: It has 3 different sections taken from advertisements; newspapers related to everyday circumstances etc.

Academic Writing: It has two tasks called task 1 where visual data is presented to write a report on and task 2 is writing an essay in 250 words around the topic.

General Writing,: In task 1 it is asked to write a letter about the given situation or request and task 2 is similar to writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

The band scores required totally depend on the country and university one wants to study in.

What is GMAT?

The GMAT is called the Graduate Management Admission Test conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council.

It is a test taken by people aspiring to pursue an MBA in reputable universities.

It is a computer-based test, and a person is evaluated on the basis of four sections with a duration of 3 hours and 7 minutes:

Analytical Writing
Integrated Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning

These tests can be given from a non-management background.

Analytical Writing revolves around writing an essay on one topic in 30 minutes.

Integrated Reasoning is about table analysis, two-part analysis, multi-source reasoning, and graphic interpretation with 12 questions in 30 minutes.

Quantitative Reasoning is based on data sufficiency and problem-solving of the student with 31 questions in 62 minutes.

Verbal Reasoning evaluates reading unseen passages, sentence correction, and critical reasoning with 36 questions with a duration of 65 minutes.

The GMAT scores are valid for up to 5 years. Although a new format is yet to come for the 2024 exam.

What is GRE?

GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination is the world’s biggest admission test for graduate, business, and law programs.

This exam consists of 3 sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing (AWA).

The ETS, the official body conducting the exam announced a few changes in the exam pattern which will come into effect on 22 September 2023.

The biggest change is the test will now have 46 fewer questions in Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning combined and only one task will be there in Analytical Writing as compared to the previous format of two.

The test duration now will be 1 hour 58 minutes and the best part is question types still remain the same along with the difficulty level.

Verbal Reasoning consists of two sections with a total of 27 questions and the time allotted to attempt it is 41 minutes, without a doubt, it is evident that 1/3 of the questions are removed. Question types are reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence with the same level of difficulty.

Quantitative Reasoning has quantitative comparison, multiple choice, numeric entry, and data interpretation while Analytical Writing the old format is completely scrapped and now it will only have one task which will be called as “Analyze an Issue” task with a duration of 30 minutes.

The pattern to attempt this exam still remains the same and the section of unscored questions is removed there is no change in the scoring pattern, it will be out of 340 marks.

The Analytical Writing section will still be scored out of 6, and universities are not altering the cutoff scores.

What is SAT?

SAT stands for Scholastic Assessment Test. It is one of the best exams and a way to study in top-notch universities across the globe.

SAT is accepted in 86 countries such as the US, Canada, the UK, and Japan. SAT is conducted 7 times within a year and the score is valid for 5 years.

The score is important for financial aid, scholarships, and other programs. It is a 2-hour 14-minute test conducted by the college board online in their centers. The marking criteria are on a scale of 1600 points.

All major Indian cities have SAT exam centers and 260 is the country code for the exam.

This exam has 2 sections: Reading and writing scores of 800 with 54 questions with a total duration of 64 minutes.

In this module, students are evaluated on the basis of vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, analytical and reasoning skills, the capacity to locate, and edit texts understand and integrate ideas, knowledge, and more.

A 10-minute short break is given before the next module.

Mathematics total score is the same with 44 questions within 70 minutes. Topics covered in mathematics are algebra, advanced math, problem-solving, trigonometry, and geometry.

There is no age limit or prescribed minimum qualifications, however, universities do. The average score of 1050 is considered according to the year 2022.
